Halal Industry Development Process

Most people now talk about the Halal Industry as an emerging industry with potential to be developed for Muslim world wide and other to consume Halal product which encompass Halal, safe, hygienic and quality products (Halalan Toyyiban).

What do we actually mean when we talk about the Halal Industry ? Are we just talking about the slaughtering process of the Halal animals or the the whole value chain process that will determine that the products are really Halal and Toyyib.

The Halal Industry Development Process is actually the whole value chain from producers, processing plants, manufacturer, supplier, packager, warehousing, storage and logistics to move the Halal products to the customer. There must be accountability for Halal certification, traceability through the value chain, integrity for the Halal logo and quality products for customer.

The Halal Industry Process chain actually include 3 main component, namely :

(1) Food Products

- include meat & poultry, food manufacturing, food retailing & restaurant chains

(2) Non Food products

- include food service industry, pharmaceuticals & health care products, etc

(3) Services

- include logistics & shipping, Islamic banking & finance, standards, auditing, certification, science and new technologies in the Halal Industries.

We must be able to trace back the Halal products on the shelves to the producers of the products. In case of meat & poultry products, even straight to the farmer that rear the animals, transporter, slaughters and slaughtering method, processing of the Halal products, storage and keeping quality of the products, logistics of these products from manufacturer & retailer directly to the consumer.

This is where the Halal Integrity comes into effect. We don't just have Halal logo on the products we must be able to trace the products direct to its sources.

In conforming with the Halal Integrity, the process must be intact and the people entrusted in doing the auditing and certification must also have the integrity and resources to verify them.

In order to fulfill the syariah compliance, the source of the fund to produce the Halal products will have to be in place through Islamic banking facilities.

The Halal Industry Development Process is a whole system process from the farm to the mouth of the consumer. The challenge is to develop the system that could be used as a standard for Halal products globally and accepted by all.

How do you foresee the Halal Industry Development to be in the near future ?
